February 26, 20242 min read

Welcome back for the fifth update on constructing a catio. The latest progress includes creating a durable and low-maintenance floor and ensuring easy access to the cat door. Let’s dive into the details to see how we are transforming this space into a feline dreamland.

This is Part Five of a multi-part series on constructing a catio. Check out Part One (Why a catio, setting posts), Part Two (chain link and roof support), Part Three (roof, gap and getting closer), and Part Four (making it functional and accessible).

It is important that the lawn crew not need to enter the catio, so using pavers to create a long-lasting and low-maintenance surface seemed the optimal way to ensure the lawn crew stays outside his domain.

Acquiring the pavers itself was an interesting experience. The loading process at the store involved a forklift, which resulted in a very much lowered truck bed, making the transport to the house, and then to the backyard a bit challenging.

Function First

We prioritized practicality over perfection when installing the pavers. We used weed block film, leveling sand, and the pavers. We used a simpler approach and skipped some of the steps you might follow for a formal patio project. Cutting some pavers to fit the space was a noisy and dusty process, but the final result is a tightly-fitted surface that Espresso showed his approval of by immediately rolling all over.

Scratch-tastic Ramp

To ensure easy access to the cat door, we added a ramp using painted lumber. However, the initial paint job became slippery when wet. To prevent slips, we added a series of self-stick scratcher mats to the ramp. It provides excellent traction in both directions, while also offering a bonus scratching area.

What’s Next?

With the catio structure complete, it’s time to move on to the furnishing phase. We’re currently working on adding shelves, climbing walls, and a tunnel to create a cat-tastic playground. Stay tuned for the next chapter to see Espresso’s ultimate hangout spot!
