Backyard Catio Phase 6: Furnishing Fun Central

April 01, 20242 min read

Welcome to the final installment of the backyard catio project. This time around, we added some cool things for Espresso to enjoy.

This is the final part of a six-part series on constructing a catio. Check out Part One (Why a catio, setting posts), Part Two (chain link and roof support), Part Three (roof, gap and getting closer), Part Four (making it functional and accessible), and Part Five (ramp and pavers).

At long last, we’ve transformed the backyard catio from a basic structure into a kitty amusement park.

We focused on creating a space that’s not just secure, but also engaging and stimulating for Espresso, so we added shelving, a hiding box, climbing areas, ramps, a hammock and even a log from a felled tree for scratching purposes.

Cat Superhighway

We strategically placed shelves to serve as walkways, connecting different areas of the catio. We even incorporated a hiding box, giving him an enclosed spot for napping or eyeing potential prey. Portholes allow Espresso to move easily across different levels of shelving.

Climbing the Walls

I wanted to encourage climbing instincts, so we added a pair of climbing walls. They provide a safe and engaging way for Espresso to explore, exercise and reach new heights.

Hammock Time

A cozy hammock provides the perfect spot for Espresso to nap or survey his domain.

Scratching Satisfaction

In addition to scratching surfaces on the shelving, I’ve added a section of a log to provide a dedicated scratching post that will help him keep his claws healthy.

Human Comforts

Of course, i carved out a small area for myself. I added a chair and small table so I can hang out with Espresso and watch him enjoying his new digs.

Tweaking for Purrfection

With all the elements in place, the catio is officially complete. I fully expect to make tweaks and adjustments as I observe how Espresso uses the space. But for now, this project is considered a roaring success.

The best part? He loves it! From dawn’s first light to his nightly patrols, Espresso has taken full ownership of his new kingdom.

I hope you’ve enjoyed following along, and I encourage you to create your own special outdoor haven for your feline friend!
